Microsoft has confirmed the closure of Ninja Theory, a key studio within its Xbox division, as part of a broader restructuring of its gaming business. The decision comes after two failed attempts to save the studio, according to reports from multiple sources. The move is part of a larger wave of layoffs, with 268 positions eliminated across Xbox studios. This follows a previous round of cuts that impacted around 1,600 employees in July, marking what Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described as the most significant restructure in the company’s history.
The restructuring also includes the integration of Obsidian into Bethesda and Rare into Activision. These changes reflect a strategic shift in Microsoft’s approach to game development, focusing on consolidation and efficiency. Ninja Theory, known for titles like *Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice* and *Dark Souls*, has been a key player in the industry, and its closure signals a major shift in Microsoft’s long-term strategy. The company has stated it has explored alternatives but has not found a viable solution to keep the studio operational.
The layoffs and studio reorganization are part of a broader "reset" aimed at streamlining operations and aligning with market demands. While the exact financial impact and future plans for affected employees remain unclear, the move underscores the challenges facing the gaming industry as companies adapt to changing consumer preferences and market conditions.
